Speech-language therapy can be helpful for those who have difficulty communicating or swallowing — disorders caused by neurologic conditions, injury to the vocal cords, or other issues that affect speech and swallowing. It can be difficult to find a speech therapist to provide services at home

COMMUNICATION ISSUES FALL INTO 2 MAIN CATEGORIES:

Speech impairment: Affects articulation (how speech sounds are made), voice (pitch or volume) and fluency (smoothness or flow).

Language impairment:  Affects understanding or using language, such as how to use language appropriately in social situations (pragmatics).

ABOUT THE THERAPY WE OFFER ONLINE:

Articulation/oral motor/speech intelligibility: Focuses on enunciation, intonation and other aspects of clear speech to improve speaking ability.

Language therapy: Language therapy is a  general term for many types of therapies that a speech-language pathologist can provide. These include:

  • Listening Skills/Receptive Language: How your child is able to understand what is being said to her and follow directions

  • Grammar Skills: Your child’s ability to use grammatical markers to form complete sentences

  • Vocabulary Skills: Your child’s knowledge of what things are called and her ability to understand those words when spoken as well as to recall and say the word when needed

  • Question Skills: Your child’s ability to answer and ask questions with a variety of structures

  • Cognitive-linguistic therapy: Improves organization, reasoning, attention, memory and social skills that affect communication, including nonverbal cues. Cognitive-linguistic disorders often occur in people with neurologic illness or injuries.

  • Voice therapy: Improves vocal quality by reducing strain and strengthening the vocal cords, which affect voice. Voice therapy focuses on proper technique, breath, pitch and other aspects of a healthy voice.

  • Fluency therapy : Focuses on eliminating stuttering behaviors.

  • Social Skills/Pragmatics: Improves understanding of how to use language appropriately in social situations — such as following the rules of conversations and storytelling, or how to adapt communication to a listener or situation.
